Literacy and Numeracy
Silkwood's Strong Academic Program
Steiner schools are sometimes misrepresented as schools lacking academic credence. At Silkwood Steiner School we have taken great care to ensure that the all the Queensland state objectives for literacy and numeracy are taught. However these objectives are placed differently throughout our year levels than State schools. Our academic program although starting off slowly builds to a high level in the upper primary and in some cases may exceed the state curriculum guidelines by the end of class seven.
The Core Skills Checklist
To ensure competency of core skills when a child enters the primary school an individual competency checklist for both literacy and numeracy is raised. This travels with the child through their primary school years. These checklists contain core skills at different year levels that the children need, to be able to progress through our curriculum. As the child demonstrates competency of these skills, they are marked off. These checklists are available for the parents to see and are also used to identify children requiring remediation.
As further accountability the school participates in the State Years 3, 5 & 7 testing for literacy and numeracy.
Academic Achievement... & More!
However, the Steiner program goes way beyond children just obtaining literacy and numeracy competency. Our children are nourished by a wide range of learning experiences that give a depth of purpose, scope for creativity and flexibility that purely information-based curricula do not.
